Watch crews blast massive boulder on Highway 50 with dynamite; roadway reopens

Caltrans crews blasted an enormous boulder that had crashed onto Highway 50 at Echo Summit with dynamite to break up and remove the rock.

Crews worked overnight to drill holes into the boulder, which measured about 15 feet by 40 feet across, in order to place the dynamite.

The boulder and debris fell onto the mountain roadway Thursday evening and closed Highway 50 in both directions near Echo Summit in El Dorado County.

Caltrans announced Friday afternoon that the Highway 50 was back open in both directions.

“Big kudos to our South Lake Tahoe area maintenance crew for their response on this incident,” Caltrans District 3 tweeted.

The slide happened just a few miles from Sierra-at-Tahoe ski resort.
