See home built for Wilt Chamberlain with wraparound pool, 5-story great room: $14.9M

The former Los Angeles home built for NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain in 1971 on a 2.5-acre hilltop — with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, the city, the Santa Monica mountains and Stone Canyon Reservoir — is back on the market for $14.9 million.

The home was custom-designed by renowned architect David Tenneson Rich. The magnificent Bel Air home, with a five-story living room and a swimming pool that wraps around the mansion, was inspired Frank Lloyd Wright’s organic style and a new brutalist design that attempts to appear raw or unadorned, according to The Agency real estate firm.

“The brutalist design is offset by ample glazing that brightens and softens the interior,” according to the official property listing.

The property re-emerged on the market Thursday by listing agents Zac Mostame, Santiago Arana and Jonathan Carr of The Agency. A previous listing in June 2018 asked $18.99 million. That listing was removed a few months later. The property resurfaced on the market in 2020 at the current asking price before again being removed a year later.

The current owner extensively renovated the architectural gem from 2008 to 2013. They “reinvigorated this masterpiece with all the coveted modern amenities,” according to The Agency.

Under a 40-foot-high cathedral ceiling, an enormous great room features walls of glass, grand columns, Bouquet Canyon stone and a sunken conversation pit with a fireplace.

The 3,395-square-foot remodeled home also has a media studio, billiards room, gym, redwood sauna, outdoor kitchen and the enormous swimming pool that “wraps the house creating an impression that it is floating in a lake,” according to the listing.

The home was known as Ursa Major, the star constellation of the Big Dipper. Big Dipper was one of Chamberlain’s nicknames.

“The rich character and history of this residence remains unrivaled,” the listing states. “Perfect for a discerning buyer who values privacy and will cherish this prized property’s striking architecture and historical significance.”

Chamberlain holds the NBA record, set in 1962, for the most points scored in a game: 100. He died in 1999.
