See San Francisco’s new tourist attraction: 14-acre park was built over a freeway
A new tourist attraction in San Francisco called Presidio Tunnel Tops will officially open July 17, 2022 with 14 acres of parkland, stunning views of the city and the Golden Gate Bridge, picnic areas, a campfire circle, gardens, trails and meadows, it was announced Wednesday.
Presidio Tunnel Tops, a $118 million addition to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, was built atop the Presidio Parkway tunnels and creates a bridge over the former Embarcadero Highway. When it opens, the park will reconnect the Presidio neighborhood to the waterfront.
The new park will have 180 varieties of native plants, transit and video centers and food options. It will be free to the public.
“A special highlight of Presidio Tunnel Tops is the Outpost—a two-acre nature play area where kids can have unforgettable adventures by swinging, crawling, and climbing on play structures that reflect elements of the Presidio and are built from fallen tree trunks, boulders, and other natural materials,” according to a news release.
The renovated Crissy Field Center and new Field Station—an indoor spot where kids can explore the Presidio through art, science and imagination—will provide self-guided and programmed activities.
Funding for Tunnel Tops came from Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy donations, which raised $98 million, and a $20 million contribution from the Presidio Trust.
Events for the Sunday, July 17, opening will be announced soon.
