Traveling on Amtrak’s popular Pacific Surfliner train? Now you can bring your pets
Here’s some good news for travelers.
Small dogs and cats are now welcome aboard Amtrak’s popular Pacific Surfliner train.
“Nobody likes to be left behind, which is why we are pleased to expand Amtrak’s pet program to Pacific Surfliner trains,” Jeanne Cantu, Amtrak vice president of California, said in a news release. “With pets being an integral part of the family, customers can bring their pets, making traveling with a four-legged friend easy and enjoyable for the entire family.”
The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner travels 351 miles of California coastline with stops at rail stations in six counties between San Luis Obispo and San Diego.
Beginning Friday, Amtrak Pacific Surfliner passengers can bring their dogs and cats on the Southern California route for $26 or 800 Amtrak Guest Reward points, the release said.
There is a size limit, however. In order to ride on the Surfliner, dogs and cats must weigh a maximum of 20 pounds, including the pet carrier, according to the release.
The number of pet reservations available per train is limited, and customers are limited to one pet reservation per trip. Pets are allowed everywhere except for in business class and the café cars, and must remain in their carriers at all times, the release said.
Passengers must sign a pet release and indemnification form prior to traveling with their animal.
The pet program is separate from Amtrak’s service animal policy. Service animals can ride on board Amtrak trains at no charge.
