A Los Angeles Police Department officer died after an accident that took place during a training exercise, California officials said in a release shared on Twitter.

Officer Houston Tipping, who worked in the Devonshire area, was acting as a bike instructor and participating in an exercise that involved grappling with another officer on Thursday, May 26, the department said. During the exercise, he fell and experienced a “catastrophic spinal cord injury,” the release said.

Other officers gave Tipping medical attention, requesting help from fire officials, but in spite of the “extraordinary measures” to help him, he died on May 29, the release said.

The department is investigating the incident to determine “if any additional measures can be taken to ensure such a tragedy is avoided in the future,” the release said.

Tipping is survived by his parents, Richard and Shirley, and his girlfriend, Britney, officials said.

“As we grieve this terrible loss, our thoughts are with the family of Officer Tipping, his Devonshire Area family, and the men and women of the Los Angeles Police Department during this difficult time,” the statement said.
