Search for Sacramento River swimmer missing since Sunday will resume Thursday in Colusa

Divers will try again Thursday to find the swimmer who went missing Sunday evening in the Sacramento River in Colusa, amid signs that search teams are now focusing on a recovery effort.

Colusa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Kris Cooper said authorities worked the river just east of Colusa’s Levee Park all day Wednesday. They were joined by Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Marine Enforcement Detail and cadaver dogs in an unsuccessful search for the swimmer.

Deputies responded just before 8:40 p.m. Sunday to a call reporting a person had gone underwater and failed to emerge. The person was not wearing a life jacket and was struggling while swimming, the Sheriff’s Office said. Searchers have combed the river since Monday with no success.

Authorities said Wednesday the possible drowning victim is identified as a 19-year-old Arizona man who was last seen wearing black pants and no shirt before entering the river.

Rescue teams will continue to focus on the stretch of Sacramento River east of Levee Park. The park at 10th and Main streets in Colusa sits next to the Sacramento River Recreation Area and is built upon the Sacramento River levee.
