A 5-year-old boy died after being found unconscious in a bathtub at a home in California, authorities said.

The boy’s father Darwin Reyes, 32, was arrested in connection with his son’s death on Monday, July 25, the Los Angeles Police Department said in a news release. Reyes is facing a charge of willful cruelty to a child.

When officers arrived at the home in the 4000 block of Marathon Street on Monday afternoon, they found the boy in the bathroom tub “unconscious and not breathing,” according to the news release. Officers tried to help the boy and called paramedics.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics took the boy to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to police.

Officials said investigators from the Juvenile Division-Abused Child Section identified Reyes as a suspect in the child’s death.

Reyes is being held on $1 million bail, police said. The investigation is ongoing, and the case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office on Wednesday, July 27 for criminal filing consideration.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 1-877-LAPD-24-7.
