A man is in critical condition at a hospital and is not expected to live after he went up to front doors of homes bleeding and screaming, California police said.

Officers responded to a residential block just before 11 p.m. on July 27 and found a man wearing only underwear sitting on top of a vehicle, according to a news release from the Stockton Police Department.

“He was also bleeding from his head,” police said.

As they got closer to the car, the man fell off and started rolling on the ground and screaming, the release says. He grabbed rocks and started throwing them at officers.

Officers handcuffed him and put him on a gurney, the release says. They later took the handcuffs off and brought him to the hospital.

“A short-time later, he became unresponsive and officers began life-saving measures inside the ambulance,” the release says. “Medics transported him to a hospital where he is not expected to survive.”

Police continue to investigate the incident.

Stockton is about 50 miles south of Sacramento.
