After getting lost floating down a California river on inner tubes, two people were rescued and then cited for having weapons and drug paraphernalia, police said.

The pair became lost while floating down the American River and started yelling for help after the sun set on Sunday, Aug. 28, the Auburn Police Department said on Facebook.

“Unfortunately, they did not have the proper gear with them, and thus they were yelling for help which luckily was heard by a local citizen who notified authorities,” the post said.

Auburn police and California State Parks rangers responded to the report of the two yelling for help in the area of China Bar, police said.

Police said the pair was cited for having drug paraphernalia and brass knuckles before they were brought back to their cars.

The police department encouraged American River visitors to come with proper gear, including a cellphone, water and food, and said to be sure to let someone know your travel plans in the event you become lost.

“You should also be aware of potentially rapid rising water levels and prepare for this by having the proper flotation device, as an inner tube is not one,” the post said. “Luckily the outcome of this incident was a happy one and not a tragic one.”

Auburn is about 30 miles northeast of Sacramento.
