27 horses rescued after floodwaters sweep through California ranches, officials say
Floodwaters swept across Southern California ranches, trapping dozens of horses, as storms pounded the state, border officials said.
Ranchers called for help around 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, after floodwaters in San Ysidro trapped 27 horses, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a news release.
San Ysidro is a district of San Diego at the U.S.-Mexico border.
The animals were trapped near the Tijuana River Valley Regional Park, officials said.
Rescuers with the Imperial Beach Horse Patrol Unit spent the day saving the horses from the water, officials said.
They rescued 27 horses, then sent 21 of those horses to Imperial Beach Border Patrol stables. The additional six horses were taken to another ranch.
Storms have swept across California, causing flooding in both the northern and southern parts of the state.
