Construction along Highway 50 could cause major delays near Tahoe. Here’s when and where

Road work

One-way traffic control will go into effect along portions of Highway 50 early this week, causing up to 20-minute delays, Caltrans wrote in a statement.

Sacramento construction company Granite Construction will begin grinding down and repaving “rough” sections of pavement. The work will stretch in both directions, 4.5 miles, between Pioneer Trail and Jewell Road in South Lake Tahoe.

Single-direction traffic will begin from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, through Thursday.

What this means

According to Caltrans, flaggers will be posted at the end of each construction zone to help control traffic flow around the construction sites.

A pilot vehicle will also lead cars through complex work zones during roadwork activity for the safety of both construction crews and drivers.

What you should do

Follow the pilot vehicles within construction zones.

Violators could receive a $220 ticket, along with traffic fees that are doubled in construction zones.

What’s the project

The work is part of the $17.1 million Caldor Fire Restoration Project.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the project focuses on reducing the risk of disastrous wildfires, repairing burned areas and rebuilding fire-damaged infrastructure within the El Dorado National Forest.
