The July 4 holiday weekend comes with celebration — and a crackdown on reckless driving.

To minimize dangerous driving on California roads, there will be an increased California Highway Patrol presence across the state to enhance public safety, according to a statement from the department. The maximum enforcement period will run from 6:01 p.m. Friday, July 30 to 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, July 4.

“Every year, speed is the leading cause of roadway crashes in our state, resulting in thousands of injuries and hundreds of deaths,” said California Highway Patrol Commissioner Sean Duryee in the news release.

“Slow down and help us make our roads safer for everyone.”

CHP is urging people to avoid distractions behind the wheel, buckle up and drive sober.

At least 44 people across California were killed in car crashes during last year’s July 4 holiday weekend. CHP made nearly 1,000 arrests for driving under the influence in the roughly three-day period.

Driving under the influence means you were driving above the alcohol limit or with other substances in your system. In California, the arrest comes with penalties including a court hearing, driver’s license suspension and court-mandated programs.

How to report impaired drivers in California
