Major highway construction to disrupt Bay Area travel this weekend. Here’s where and when

Traffic Alert

Caltrans will close westbound Interstate 80 Labor Day weekend to perform pavement repair work in Contra Costa County.

A full highway closure of westbound I-80 will start Thursday after 9 p.m. and end next Tuesday no later that 5 a.m., according to a Caltrans news release.

This closure is part of a series of weekend and holiday I-80 closures on both the east and westbound lanes that are intended to shorten the duration of the overall project. It is scheduled to be completed this summer, rather than the anticipated end date in 2024.

Traffic this weekend will be detoured beginning at the westbound I-80/I-780 interchange in Vallejo, according to the news release.

What detours will be in effect?

Detours will be in effect during the time of construction, Caltrans said in the release.

Westbound I-80 detours include:

From westbound Interstate 80 at I-780 in Vallejo, exit onto eastbound I-780

Continue on eastbound I-780 past Benicia

Continue on southbound I-680 toward Concord

Exit onto westbound Highway 4 toward Hercules

Re-enter westbound I-80 from westbound Highway 4 in Hercules

A full highway closure of westbound I-80 scheduled for Labor Day weekend will start Thursday after 9 p.m. and conclude next Tuesday no later that 5 a.m., according to a Caltrans news release.

What work is being done?

Caltrans will perform work on the two center traffic lanes in both the eastbound and westbound directions of I-80 to repair the roadway that has become worn due to decades of high traffic use.

The holiday closure is necessary for worker and public safety during the project, according to the release.
