An accused gunman randomly opened fire on passing vehicles, killing one man and injuring another, California sheriff’s officials reported.

Victor Hugo Leon, 42, of San Jacinto, could not be revived after being shot at 7:05 a.m. Monday, June 3, while driving, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Leon, a father of four, was driving home after working an overnight shift at a warehouse, his widow, Griselda Zepeda, told KTLA.

“He was a very lovable person,” Zepeda told the station. “He leaves us very broken.”

She knew something was wrong when she woke up and Leon had not arrived home. After he didn’t return numerous phone calls, “I knew something was bad,” she said.

“I don’t know what was going through his mind, the last breath he took,” Zepeda told KTLA. “It hurts me so much.”

“Victor was an amazing father, husband and friend,” said a GoFundMe organized to assist his family. “Victor’s smile and sense of humor will be truly missed, he leaves a hole in the hearts of us who knew him.”

The second person shot was taken to a hospital, deputies said. Numerous vehicles were hit by bullets.

During an investigation into the incident, deputies arrested Julio Cesar Rodarte, 39, of San Jacinto, on charges of murder and 10 counts of attempted murder, officials said.

An investigation continues, but detectives say there are no outstanding suspects.

Sheriff’s officials ask anyone with information to call 951-955–2777 or 951-654–2702.

San Jacinto is about a 90-mile drive southeast from downtown Los Angeles.
