Looking for a cozy getaway? Northern California is home to one of the best bed-and-breakfast spots in the nation, according to USA Today.

The publication recently ranked the top 10 bed-and-breakfasts in the United States in 2024.

“If you’re looking to experience the charm and hospitality of a destination, staying at a bed-and-breakfast can be a great idea,” USA Today said in a Wednesday article, noting that B&Bs offer “a more intimate setting” complete with home-cooked meals.

The Winchester Inn in Ashland, Oregon, was No. 1 on USA Today’s list, while The Welsh Hills Inn in Granville, Ohio, came in second place and Wickwood Inn in Saugatuck, Michigan, was third.

Only one California hotel made the list.

Why is Mendocino County hotel one of best B&Bs in US?

Advertised as “one of the most romantic boutique hotels on the Northern California coast, Elk Cove Inn & Spa in Mendocino County offers “unpretentious comfort” and gourmet food amid spectacular ocean views, according to its website.

“Nestled in peaceful seclusion atop a bluff overlooking a mile of dramatic beachfront,” the Craftsman-style mansion was built in Elk in 1883 by L.E. White Lumber Co, the website said. It became one of the first bed-and-breakfast inns on the Mendocino Coast in 1968.

Visitors can choose from a range of guest accommodations, from carriage house rooms to cliffside oceanfront cottages, USA Today said.

“Each morning, guests can start their day with a decadent breakfast crafted by chef Victor Passalacqua,” the publication said.

Diners can order from a grab-and-go menu or enjoy dinner at the inn’s on-site restaurant, Sibo.

Other amenities include a day spa, a gazebo and private stairs leading to the beach.
