Powerball player hits $44 million jackpot in California. Where was the lucky ticket sold?
A Powerball ticket sold in California hit the $44 million jackpot, lottery officials say.
The ticket matched all five winning numbers and the Powerball in the drawing Monday, Aug. 19, the California Lottery said.
The cash value of the jackpot is $21.9 million.
The grand prize now drops to an estimated $20 million, with a cash value of $9.9 million, for the next drawing Wednesday, Aug. 21, the national Powerball site said.
The winning numbers were 1, 2, 15, 23 and 28 with a Powerball of 10, the lottery said. The Power Play was 2/.
The winning ticket was sold at a Ralphs supermarket in Dana Point, about a 60-mile drive southeast from Los Angeles.
A ticket sold in Nebraska won $1 million, the national Powerball site said.
More than 31,000 other Powerball tickets sold in California also won prizes ranging from $4 to more than $40,000, the lottery said.
The Powerball jackpot had gone unclaimed since Aug. 12, when a Pennsylvania player won the $213.8 million grand prize, lottery officials said.
What to know about Powerball
To score a jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball.
The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338.
Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state.
Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.
Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
