‘Emaciated’ dog had eaten socks, rocks and a toy. Then came ‘lifesaving’ surgery in CA
A “very sweet” and “very hungry” dog is on the mend after she had “lifesaving surgery” — to remove two pounds of socks, rocks and a toy from her stomach.
Photo and video shows she had eaten a total of eight socks, several rocks and a fabric toy, Ventura County Animal Services said in a Monday, Sept. 16 post on Facebook.
“Brooklyn, an 8-year-old Cane Corso, arrived at Ventura County Animal Services emaciated (extremely thin),” the shelter said in the post. “It was discovered she had ingested 8 socks, a toy, and several rocks which were likely preventing her from absorbing the nutrients she desperately needed.”
Staff at the shelter weren’t sure why she ate the inedible objects, but it was clear she needed help — fast.
“Our dedicated VCAS medical team worked tirelessly, providing care, love, and supplemental food to help Brooklyn recover,” the shelter said.
A three-hour surgery to remove the items went well, and veterinarians also repaired an ulcer and spayed her, the shelter said.
A photo shows the socks — one pair of crew cut socks and three pairs of ankle socks, plus the fabric toy.
“There were also some rocks and twigs mixed in there as well,” said Dr. Kentfield, a veterinarian who performed the surgery.
“In just a few days, Brooklyn gained nearly four (4) pounds…or six (6) pounds if you don’t include the two (2) pounds of foreign objects removed from her stomach!” the shelter said.
Video shows the “very sweet” dog walking on a leash in the sunshine and enjoying lots of love and affection.
“A few days following her lifesaving surgery, Brooklyn was transferred to the West Coast Cane Corso Rescue in Northern California for continued care, recovery, and eventual adoption,” the shelter said. “Our county municipal shelter is dedicated to ensuring every animal receives the love, care, and attention they need. This is what lifesaving looks like!”
“She is reportedly eating very well!” a text caption over the video says.
