Dust devil at youth football game spirals into ‘tornado’-like form, California video shows
A video caught the moment a dust devil spiraled into the air at a California youth football game, sending debris flying and people running.
The video posted on TikTok shows what’s known as a dust devil taking form and twisting into the air.
“Dust devils form in areas of strong surface heating, usually at the interface between different surface types, such as asphalt and dirt, or even irrigated fields and dirt roads,” according to the National Weather Service.
The caption on the video said it happened at a Pop Warner football game, which is a youth football organization.
People attending the football game can be seen grabbing items to keep them from flying and covering their faces.
One woman can be heard yelling, “oh my God” and “that’s a tornado.”
Dust devils “are generally smaller and less intense than a tornado,” according to the National Weather Service. The organization later confirmed that what was seen in the video was a dust devil, KNBC reported.
