An investigation is underway after California police say a beachgoer found human remains during low tide.

The beachgoer called police after finding what they thought to be a “human skull and a bone along the low-tide waterline of (RAT) Beach” the afternoon of Saturday, Nov. 16, the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department said in a Nov. 17 Facebook post.

Acting Capt. Aaron Belda told The Daily Breeze that officers arrived as the “tide was coming in.”

“And sure enough, when they got there, they saw what looked to be a skull and a part of a skeleton, a torso in the surf,” Belda told the newspaper.

Officers found additional bones at the location, according to police.

Upon examining the remains, the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office confirmed they were human, police said.

The coroner’s office recovered the remains and is working with police to identifying them, the department said, adding that there is currently no information about the person’s possible age, gender or cause of death.

RAT Beach is about a 25-mile drive southwest from Los Angeles.
