Driver abandons passengers after SUV falls off cliff, CA rescuers say. One is missing
The search is on for a passenger of an SUV that flew over a cliff days ago, California rescuers say.
An SUV with a driver and two people in tow went over the side of a cliff off of Deer Creek Road on Saturday, Nov. 30, the Ventura County Fire Department said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Deer Creek Road, which offers a scenic drive along the coast, includes twists and turns, does not have guardrails and is considered a challenging road to navigate, according to the website Dangerous Roads.
After rolling multiple times, the SUV ended up flipped 1,000 feet down from the road, firefighters told OnScene.TV, The Los Angeles Times reported.
At the time of the crash, however, no one called 911, rescuers said.
The driver managed to get out of the car and left the area in a separate car, according to rescuers.
Days later, the driver returned to the cliffside on Monday, Dec. 2, and reported the crash, fire officials said.
Rescuers said they started ground and aerial searches for the two passengers.
Later that evening, one of the missing passengers was found at their home, rescuers said in an update.
The other passenger is still missing, rescuers said, adding that they are continuing to search for them.
Ventura County is about a 70-mile drive northwest from Los Angeles.
