California AG to investigate fatal shooting involving parole officer. Parolee killed is ID’d
The Attorney General’s Office launched an investigation on Thursday into a fatal shooting involving a parole officer who allegedly killed his parolee in Fresno earlier this week.
On Tuesday, a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation parole officer was conducting a home visit in Fresno when a physical altercation escalated, leading the officer to shoot his parolee, said CDCR spokesperson Pedro Calderón Michel.
Jeremy Sanchez, 26, died at the scene despite the parole officer’s efforts to perform life-saving measures, Calderón Michel said. The department declined to share more information about that incident.
CDCR confirmed that the parole officer had 13 years of experience.
CDCR said that both the AG’s office and the Fresno Police Department are investigating the incident.
“Additionally, CDCR’s Deadly Force Review Board (DFRB) will review the incident at the conclusion of the criminal and administrative investigations,” Calderón Michel said.
Under a 2020 state law, the California Department of Justice is required to investigate deadly shootings involving law enforcement officers in the state when the victim is unarmed.
Citing the investigation, the AG’s office did not answer questions about the incident.
Editor’s note: A previous version of the story incorrectly stated the parole officer ‘s experience.
