California has highest gas prices in the nation, AAA says. Here’s where to fuel up for less
California residents pay more for gas than anywhere else in the nation — and fuel prices are steadily rising, according to data from AAA.
As of Friday, the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in California was $4.84, the automobile association said.
That’s 5 cents more than the previous week, and an increase of almost 40 cents since January.
In contrast, the national average cost of a gallon of gas was $3.16 on Friday, AAA said.
Drivers of electric vehicles can expect to pay 35 cents on average per kilowatt hour of electricity at a public EV charging station, AAA said, compared to the national average of 34 cents.

Why are California gas prices so high?
Various factors feed into California’s sky-high gas prices, according to experts.
One cause of rising fuel costs is “ongoing repairs and maintenance at many California refineries, and production of summer blend gasoline,” AAA said in its Thursday release. “Bay Area refining capacity is now half of its 2019 levels.”
California’s high gas taxes also “(push) up the price of gasoline at the pump,” said Derek Stimel, associate economics professor at UC Davis.
“We also have very strict environmental regulations about the type of gas that we produce in the state so it’s expensive for refineries to produce,” Stimel told the Fresno Bee. “That adds to the cost and the price.”
A lack of new refinery capacity in California also affects “the supply of gasoline and the overall cost,” Stimel said.
“We’re very much a car culture in California. A driving culture,” he explained. “So the demand for gas ... is usually pretty high as well.”
Which California counties have cheapest, priciest gas?
As of Friday, the cheapest California county to fuel up your car was Imperial County near the southeast border of the state, according to AAA.
