CA company recalls 20 million eggs. Here are the local stores where they were sold
More than 20 million eggs have been recalled due to a salmonella outbreak that’s sickened people in seven states, including California.
It’s linked to a Merced County company.
August Egg Co. of Hilmar recalled a total of 1.7 million dozen cage-free and certified organic brown eggs “because they have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella,” the company wrote in a Friday, June 6, announcement shared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The bacteria “can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people,” as well as those with weakened immune systems,” said August Egg Co., a division of Gemperle Enterprises in Turlock.
Potentially tainted eggs were shipped to supermarkets across California, the company said.
Here’s what to know:

What is salmonella? What are symptoms?
Considered a “leading cause of foodborne illness in the United States,” salmonella bacteria sicken about 1.35 million people across the nation every year, according to the federal Centers for Disease and Prevention.
You can get exposed to salmonella by eating contaminated food, drinking contaminated water or touching animals or their poop, the CDC said.
Common salmonella symptoms include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. In some cases, salmonella infections can lead to hospitalization or death.
“You can help prevent infection by washing your hands, safely preparing and storing food, and being mindful while swimming, traveling and playing with animals,” the CDC said.
Who has gotten sick due to tainted eggs?
The multi-state salmonella outbreak linked to tainted eggs had sickened a total of 79 people as of Friday, according to the CDC.
That includes 63 California residents.
A total of 11 people fell ill in Arizona, Nevada and Washington state, the CDC said, while a total of five people got sick in Kentucky, Nebraska and New Jersey.
Of the people affected by the outbreak, 21 have been hospitalized.
What should I do now?
If you have any of the eggs affected by the recall, return them to the store for a refund or toss them in the trash.
