A California restaurant snagged the top spot as the best friend chicken in the country, and Yelp reviewers are saying the line out the door is “absolutely worth it.”
Howlin’ Ray’s ranks No. 1
Those living out of state might need to “hit the road” after Howlin’ Ray’s in Los Angeles claimed the No. 1 spot on Yelp’s “top 50 fried chicken spots,” list.
The “all-time list of the top fried chicken” was created after Yelp identified the fried chicken shops throughout the U.S. and Canada and looked at reviews of “Elite squad members.”
Chicken joint goers can order Nashville hot tenders, sandwiches, fries and even chicken and waffles.
Howlin’ Ray’s is known for its “spicy heat levels,” making it a “must-visit for fried chicken lovers.”
Reviewers said the “chicken was crispy on the outside, hot and moist on the inside,” making the long lines have “good reason.”
Another reviewer agreed with the ranking saying, “I would say this place has my favorite fried chicken in all of LA (and possibly anywhere,)” specifying that the crunchy-to-crispy ratio was “perfect.”
Daybird ranks No. 10
Not only did Los Angeles snag the coveted No. 1 spot, but the city also managed to grab the No. 10 spot with Daybird, a spot known for “specializing in spicy Sichuan-style fried chicken sandwiches.”
Reviewers said the “small shop served the absolute best chicken sandwich.”
Even the fish sandwich got a standing ovation, with a reviewer making it clear the joint is “worth making a special trip.”
For those strictly looking for chicken, Daybird offers tenders in a variety of spice levels from “no heat” to “extreme” and sauces like habanero ranch, hot honey and “daybird sauce.”
Other California spots on the list
The City of Angels managed to snag another spot in the top 20 with Gol Tong Chicken coming in at No. 12
Gol Tong Chicken “serves up Korean chicken wings” with a twist with the options to order boneless fried chicken, boneless soy garlic chicken or boneless soy garlic chicken.
As for the Northern California crunchy chicken connoisseurs, San Francisco’s Cracked and Battered came in at No. 15.
Known for being a brunch spot, the restaurant offers its “creative takes on classic comfort food,” making for a fabulous “fluffy” waffle accompanied alongside a chicken that “is crunchy yet still juicy on the inside.”
“I knew they were known for their fried chicken and waffles since everyone around me was ordering it,” a reviewer said.
Although California seems to have proven it might be the state for spot-on fried chicken, Monell’s Dining and Catering in Nashville, Tennessee, came in at No. 2, and Waipahu, Hawaii’s Tanioka’s Seafood and Catering snagged the No. 3 spot.
