A massive sea creature was seen taking a “spa break” off the coast of California and boaters are calling the moment “amazing.”

On Aug. 3, a humpback whale was seen exhibiting an “uncommon” behavior to witness called kelping, according to a Facebook post by the Monterey Bay Whale Watch.

Kelping is when “curious” whales throw kelp on their skin as a means of relieving “itches on the skin or just because it feels good,” the group said.

Kelp possess “antibacterial and antifungal qualities,” making it a whale’s perfect “skin care routine” and allowing for it to help in removing “barnacles and lice that build up on their skin and cause irritation,” according to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation’s website.

The whale was seen rubbing a kelp patty on its upper jaw and although the group was lucky enough to see the behavior, kelping can lead to humpbacks becoming entangled, boaters said.

The group hopes for a “future where whales can play and explore without risk of negative impacts from human activity,” boaters said.

Monterey is about a 120-mile drive southeast from San Francisco.
