A caregiver is accused of killing a man he said fell in a bathtub, California police say.

Paul Jonathan Donell, 42, was arrested in connection with the death of Ollie Johnson, 66, the Pomona Police Department said in an Aug. 27 Facebook post.

Attorney information for Donell was not immediately available.

Officers responded to a home Friday, Aug. 22, after getting a call requesting CPR for a man who had fallen in a tub, police said.

When officers and fire officials arrived, they found Johnson, “who appeared to have been unresponsive for some time,” police said.

But Johnson’s injuries did not match Donell’s explanation of what happened, police said.

First responders pronounced Johnson dead on the scene.

Given “the suspicious circumstances,” police said detectives from its major crimes unit assumed the investigation.

Detectives gathered evidence, leading to Donell’s arrest, police said.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office determined there was enough evidence to file criminal charges against Donell after detectives presented the case Aug. 25, police said.

Donell was charged with murder and one count of elder or dependent adult abuse resulting in death.

An investigation into Johnson’s death is ongoing, police said.

Pomona is about a 30-mile drive east from Los Angeles.
