Boaters off the coast of California came across sea creatures, creating a “dazzling day on the water,” passengers said.

Groups came across a lunge-feeding humpback whale throughout the “stunning weather conditions” that left passengers with “memories for a lifetime,” according to a Sept. 1 Facebook post by the San Diego Whale Watch.

The day started with a “Russian roulette style decision,” with boaters knowing whales were spotted in the north and south but decided to head straight out with “nothin but determination,” boaters said.

As boaters continued throughout their day, they found thousands of birds diving and 500 long-beaked common dolphins, until they came across a “BIG spout,” boaters said.

As they continued getting closer, they realized it was a humpback whale taking part in an “insane feeding frenzy,” boaters said.

After noticing some “spunky dive patterns,” the group “knew something was up.” That’s when the humpback whale started lunge feeding vertically, a behavior rarely seen in the area, the group said.

Later in the day, groups saw a “vibrant pod” of long-beaked common dolphin looking for food while the same humpback followed them, boaters said.

The whale “had the zoomies” and continued to surprise boaters by surfacing in different directions, the group said.

“What an absolutely REMARKABLE DAY,” boaters said.
