Powerball players win nearly $1 million in California as jackpot hits $1.7 billion
Two Powerball tickets sold in California won $984,594 each, just missing the $1.44 billion jackpot, lottery officials say.
The tickets matched five winning numbers but not the Powerball in the drawing Wednesday, Sept. 3, the California Lottery said. Fifteen other California players won $33,000 each.
California adjusts lottery prize amounts based on the number of tickets sold and number of winners.
The lucky tickets were purchased at an Albertson’s supermarket in Bakersfield and a Stater Brothers supermarket in Riverside.
Tickets sold in Michigan, Oregon, Texas and Wyoming matched five winning numbers and the Power Play multiplier but not the Powerball to win $2 million each in the drawing, the national Powerball site said.
Tickets sold in Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio and Pennsylvania matched five winning numbers but not the Powerball to win $1 million each.
Across the U.S., 117 players matched four numbers drawn and the Powerball to win $50,000, and 36 more added the Power Play multiplier to win $100,000.
The winning numbers were 3, 16, 29, 61 and 69 with a Powerball of 22. The Power Play multiplier was 2x.
Powerball jackpot rises
Nobody won the grand prize, which rises to an estimated $1.7 billion, with a cash value of about $770.3 million, for the next drawing Saturday, Sept. 6, the national Powerball site said.
More than 6.3 million other Powerball tickets sold in the United States also won prizes ranging from $4 to $200, the lottery said.
The Powerball jackpot was last won May 31, when a California player hit the $204.5 million grand prize.
