The idea to take his music to new heights came during an airplane flight over iconic Half Dome at Yosemite National Park, according to media reports.
In a video posted Wednesday, San Francisco DJ Habitaat opened his set atop Yosemite’s popular granite rock formation by saying, “Hey this is Habitaat and I’m about to record the very first DJ set on the top of Half Dome.”
The DJ, Tomas Wischerath, told Fox KTVU that the idea came to him when he was returning from a show. His plane flew right over Half Dome.
“And I could see like really close, like, that’s Half Dome right there. That’s where the idea clicked, ‘what if I did a DJ set on top?’” he told the Bay Area news station.
He told fans on social media that he carried all his equipment up to the top of the mountain, saying “Yes it was worth it!”
The set is now streaming on YouTube. Habitaat recorded without speakers or extra amplification, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
In an Instagram post, Wischerath said he did not take the privilege of performing in such an epic setting lightly.
“Remember - our national parks and wild places aren’t guaranteed to be here forever. Right now, powerful interests are pushing to sell off or weaken protections for the very lands that belong to all of us,” he wrote on Instagram.
“These parks are more than scenery — they’re sacred spaces, homes for wildlife, and places where we can reconnect with ourselves and the earth. If you love places like Yosemite and want them to stay wild and accessible for future generations, please pay attention, speak up, and support the organizations working to defend them.”
