Rescue training interrupted by an actual rescue of missing boy, CA officials say

A rope training exercise in California ended with the successful rescue of a lost 10-year-old boy, rescuers reported.

As 30 Marin County Search and Rescue team members finished training, a “concerned” mother reported her son had gone missing, the team said in a Saturday, Sept. 6, news release.

The 10-year-old boy, who has autism, had run ahead of her on a nearby trail and vanished, the mother told rescuers. He was last spotted on the trail above Rodeo Beach, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

National Park Service rangers from the Golden Gate National Recreation Area team also joined the search, and one riding a motorcycle found the boy about a mile away after about an hour, rescuers said.

The boy also had climbed several hundred feet in elevation, rescuers said. He was reunited with his mother.

“Sometimes searches find you,” rescuers said in the release.

Marin County is about a 40-mile drive northwest from San Francisco.
