A “frightened” dog ran away from his California home during a storm and was missing for months, his owner said.

Then, the owner got a call from 2,000 miles away, an Illinois shelter said.

On July 1, Opie, a corgi breed, was seen at a gas station in Bieber, according to a Facebook post by California – PawBoost.

Opie’s owner, Ciara Babcock, was “devastated” her dog had run off, but she “never gave up” hope because she knew Opie was microchipped, according to an Oct. 1 Facebook post by DuPage County Animal Services.

On Sept. 29, Itasca officers in Illinois brought him as a stray into the Wheaton-based shelter, and team members scanned his chip, the shelter told The Los Angeles Times.

Opie was found on the outskirts of Chicago after possibly being picked up by someone before ending up in Illinois with a collar identifying him under a different name,an administrator at the shelter, Laura Flamion, told the outlet.

After a single phone call and a flight the next day, Babcock was reunited with Opie, the shelter said.

Facebook users went to the comments to share their thoughts on the touching reunion story, with one person saying, “Wow! That’s the farthest rescue I know of! Great job getting them back together.”

“That’s amazing,” another wrote.

Bieber is about a 250-mile drive northeast from Sacramento.
