Mom pleaded to boyfriend as he fatally shot her in front of kids, CA officials say
A mother pleaded with her ex-boyfriend as he fatally shot her in front her young children, California prosecutors said.
Lawyer Dushan McBride, 51, was given a 95-year-to-life prison sentence in connection with the death of Rashanda Franklin, 30, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office said in an Oct. 10 news release.
McBride’s sentencing comes after a jury found him guilty of murder in Franklin’s 2017 slaying, prosecutors said.
An attorney for McBride did not immediately respond to McClatchy News’ request for comment Oct. 13.
“This tragic case underscores the devastating reality of domestic violence, which claims far too many lives,” District Attorney Diana Becton said in the release. “While no verdict can bring back a mother taken from her children in such a senseless act of violence, this sentence provides the victim’s family with a measure of justice and accountability.”
In 2017, Franklin arrived at “a church parking lot where she dropped off her children for school” to find McBride waiting for her, prosecutors said.
Weeks earlier, Franklin had broken off her two-year relationship with McBride, and he had been “harassing her” since, according to prosecutors.
“Fearing for her safety, Franklin called 911 and drove away with her children still in the car,” prosecutors said.
McBride followed in his car, and as the two approached a Richmond intersection, he cut Franklin off, prosecutors said.
McBride left his car and approached Franklin, the district attorney’s office said.
“I’ve got my kids in the car,” Franklin pleaded with McBride, she can heard saying on the 911 call, prosecutors said.
“I ain’t playing with you,” McBride said, then fatally shot Franklin, according to prosecutors.
The 911 call ended with the sounds of “ear-piercing screams from two of Franklins’ sons, then aged 9 and 5, who witnessed it all,” Bay Area News Group reported in February at the start of McBride’s trial.
“It’s totally wrong. My baby is gone and there is nothing I can do to bring her back,” Franklin’s father Michael Porter told CBS in 2017. “I just want justice.”
Along with a murder, McBride’s sentencing also stems from “offenses of firing into an occupied vehicle, stalking, and using a firearm to cause death,” prosecutors said.
Richmond is about a 20-mile drive northeast from San Francisco.
