When students are deciding whether to attend college in California, nightlife and social activities can be deciding factors.

“Top party colleges have a vibrant and diverse party scene,” the school rating and review website said, offering “fun options both on and off campus.”

Here’s which schools made the list, and why:

How big is UC Santa Barbara’s party scene?

Reddit users said UC Santa Barbara’s party scene has evolved in the past 10 to 15 years, with parties no longer dominating social activities.

“It’s like a bad reputation that won’t go away,” Reddit user Tangerine_Flowers wrote in December 2024. “There are parties, but it’s not the entire school ...”

“If parties aren’t your jam, there are a million other things to do,” Reddit user Seanmharcailin wrote in a March 23 comment. “Join clubs. Do sports. Become a hermit crab. Do all the honors seminars.”

Historically, partiers have flocked to Isla Vista — an unincorporated community that’s popular with UC Santa Barbara students — for unsanctioned, weekend-long parties Floatopia and Deltopia.

Santa Barbara County shut down Floatopia in 2010.

County and community leaders are seeking to dampen the effects of Deltopia in early April by imposing a 72-hour festival ban, closing Isla Vista beaches and hosting a new music festival, Soltopia, local media outlets reported.
