‘Shocked’ California winner scans ticket ‘three or four times’ on lottery jackpot

A California State Lottery player in Van Nuys said he could hardly believe it when he won $5 million on a Superstar Scratchers ticket.

“I scanned the ticket, saw the winning number, scratched the prize, and then saw the $5 million jackpot,” M. Zey said in a lottery news release. “I was extremely shocked. I scanned the ticket maybe three or four times before I realized I was a $5 million winner.”

Zey purchased the ticket at Harvest Market at 14055 Burbank Blvd. on Dec. 27, the lottery said.

“I’ve been playing there for about eight years,” he said. “I’ve won smaller prizes before, but never anything like this.”

Zey said he’s “thrilled” about the win but is still taking it in.

Also, Mai Vo won $10 million on a 7’s Scratchers purchased at Dolce Espresso at 2078 Tully Road in San Jose, lottery officials said.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
