Firefighters on Wednesday afternoon battled a 22-acre vegetation fire along the American River.

Shortly before noon, the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District responded to the fire originating near Enterprise Drive and Northrup Avenue, Metro Fire spokesman Capt. Parker Wilbourn said.

The fire was caused by people, according a statement made by Metro Fire on social media. The tweet noted that the origin of the blaze was “near multiple homeless encampments.”

According to Wilbourn, “a large resource team” including crews from Metro Fire and and the Sacramento Fire Department had the fire under control around 3 p.m.

Flames briefly threatened a commercial structure on Hurley Way that was evacuated, Wilbourn said.
