McKinney Fire video: Vehicles, buildings laid to waste as crews battle CA wildfire

New video shows crews battling the largest wildfire so far this year in California.

Firefighters braced for thunderstorms and hot, windy conditions that created the potential for additional fire growth as they seek to protect remote communities.

The video was shot July 31, 2022 as the McKinney Fire was burning out of control in Northern California’s Klamath National Forest, with expected thunderstorms a big concern Sunday just south of the Oregon state line.

“The fuel beds are so dry and they can just erupt from that lightning,” U.S. Forest Service spokesperson Adrienne Freeman said in AP video. “These thunder cells come with gusty erratic winds that can blow fire in every direction.”

Meanwhile, the bodies of two people were found inside a burned out vehicle in a residential driveway inside the McKinney Fire zone in Northern California on Sunday, officials said, the first fatalities from the state’s largest wildfire of the year so far. Siskiyou County sheriff’s officials said the bodies were found at 9:57 a.m. in a driveway off Doggett Creek Road, off Highway 96 west of the community of Klamath River.

No identities or further information was released pending notification of next of kin.

The Associated Press and Sacramento Bee reporters Sam Stanton and Ryan Sabalow contributed to this story.
