Residents of Nevada County were briefly evacuated Saturday after a fire sparked near Highway 49 and several miles northwest of Lake of the Pines.

The Still Fire, which started before noon, chewed through 44 acres of vegetation before firefighters stopped forward progress about 5 p.m. By Sunday morning, Cal Fire Nevada-Yuba-Placer unit said the fire was 80% contained.

Evacuation orders were issued for homes along Still and Wolf roads, two miles northwest of Higgins Corner, but residents were allowed back in by Nevada County sheriff’s deputies before sundown.

At least one home was destroyed in the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
