Fire breaks out at south Sacramento recycling facility

A fire broke out Tuesday afternoon at a Sierra Waste recycling and transfer station in south Sacramento and grew to a three-alarm blaze as about 75 firefighters from multiple agencies joined the battle.

Sacramento Fire Department officials advised that the fire, reported shortly after 4 p.m., was burning in piles of debris that included wood and plastics at the site on Berry Avenue near Power Inn Road.

No homes were threatened. But firefighting was complicated by north winds that spread the flames.

The city fire personnel were aided by crews from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District. Crews were beginning to knock down the fire about 5 p.m., officials said.
