Update: Containment of Jerusalem fire grows to 52 percent

The Jerusalem fire, which has been burning since Sunday in rugged Lake County backcountry, grew by another 550 acres, and fire officials announced that it was 52 percent contained as of Friday morning.

The fire has scorched 24,555 acres.

Containment more than doubled overnight Wednesday, as the area burned grew by 3,000 acres.

The fire is south of the mostly contained Rocky fire, which has charred about 70,000 acres. The Jerusalem blaze is burning toward the larger wildfire, even touching in some locations. When the smaller, more active Jerusalem fire burns into the Rocky, the blaze will die or subside, fire officials said.

A total of 2,053 fire personnel are battling the Jerusalem fire. It is burning in brush, grass and timber.
