Metro Fire plans two managed vegetation burns in Sacramento County

The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District will burn vegetation in two areas of Sacramento County for land management on Sunday and Monday.

The first managed burn will be Sunday at Mather Air Field. The second will be Monday along the Dry Creek parkway near Rio Linda Boulevard and Crystal Road, according to the fire district.

The Mather Air Field burn will decrease the potential for uncontrolled fires during the California Capital Air Show in October, officials said. Metro Fire is working with the Sacramento County Airport system on the project.

The second management burn will aim to eliminate invasive plant species and improve the habitat for native wildlife, according to the fire district.

Because the area is known as having increased wildland fire activity, the burns will also reduce the potential for future uncontrolled fires. Additionally, Metro Fire and Sacramento Fire Department crews will partner to provide live burn training for fire personnel during the management burn.
