Updated: These major fitness chains have closed Sacramento-area gyms due to coronavirus
Sacramento County officials in a Tuesday statement urged compliance with Gov. Gavin Newsom’s order the night before, which called for all restaurants to end dine-in service and for bars, card rooms and health clubs to close to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
The county reiterated, among those directives that “all gatherings of any size, effective immediately” should be canceled. “All gyms should be closed” as well, the county urged.
Gyms are among local business and regional and nationwide chains continuing to adapt at different speeds to the blur of intense government orders.
Here is a list of major gym and fitness center closures for chains that operate in the Sacramento area.
24 Hour Fitness
The California-headquartered chain, which operates hundreds of gyms across more than a dozen states Monday announced all of its clubs would close that night at midnight until further notice.
CEO Tony Ueber, in a letter to 24 Hour Fitness members, said memberships would be extended for the same duration of the closure once it ends, and recommended the company’s remote personal training program.
There are more than a dozen locations of the chain in the Sacramento area, with spots downtown, in the Pocket, south Sacramento, Elk Grove, Arden, Carmichael, Rancho Cordova, Gold River, Folsom, Citrus Heights, Antelope and Roseville.
California Family Fitness
Commonly known as CalFit, the gym brand announced Tuesday afternoon on social media that all of its clubs are temporarily closed, as of 2 p.m. that day.
The gym chain said previously, in a Monday night update, that it was adjusting hours at its locations and postponing all group fitness classes through the end of March. According to its website, each had planned to shorten business hours two days a week, not opening until noon on one day and closing early at 4 p.m. the other day, with those two days varying by location.
CalFit has 19 gyms, all in the Sacramento region.
Crunch Fitness
Crunch Fitness on Tuesday afternoon announced that California was among more than a dozen states mandating its gyms close due to the coronavirus. Prior to that update, the Crunch website and social media feeds had not referenced the virus.
Crunch has six spots in the Sacramento area: one in each of Sacramento, Elk Grove, Citrus Heights, Folsom, Granite Bay and Rocklin.
Gold’s Gym
Gold’s Gym announced via Twitter that all of its locations nationwide are closed through the end of March. The gyms closed at 8 p.m. Monday.
Gold’s has one location in Citrus Heights, at 8485 Auburn Boulevard.
Life Time Fitness
Life Time, one of North America’s largest health club chains, is temporarily closing all of its locations, the gym giant’s website says, in accordance with government orders regarding COVID-19.
The closures include locations in Folsom and Roseville.
Orangetheory Fitness
Orangetheory, which specializes in group workouts, announced Monday it will close all of its studios due to the coronavirus, with a goal of reopening March 31.
“Our communities are strong,” Orangetheory CEO David Long and President David Carney said in a message to members. “We will work to maintain those connections in the days and weeks ahead, and we will help keep you active with at-home workouts that will be available to you in the coming days.”
Orangetheory’s eight Sacramento-area locations are in midtown, Natomas, Arden, Carmichael, Folsom, Roseville, Rocklin and, of course, Orangevale.
Planet Fitness
National chain Planet Fitness in a news release Tuesday said it is closing its corporate stores and is “strongly urging its franchisees” to do the same through at least March 31.
Earlier Wednesday morning, the Planet Fitness website showed only the Citrus Heights location in the Sacramento area being closed due to COVID-19, but by 9 a.m., all local gyms are shown as closed.
Planet Fitness operates 10 24-hour locations between Sacramento County, West Sacramento and Rocklin.
The brand has been advertising remote workout options on its website with a large banner on its main page stating, “United we move. We’re bringing the gym to you.” The Planet Fitness website says the gym chain is streaming “free in-home workouts” via live Facebook video at 4 p.m. Pacific time every day.
