Sacramento State postpones graduation ceremonies, other CSU campuses calling off, too
Sacramento State announced it is postponing the university’s May commencement ceremonies “in light of the current health and safety concerns caused by the coronavirus or COVID-19 pandemic.”
The statement, released Tuesday afternoon, did not include new dates for the ceremonies. Originally, the events were scheduled on May 15 through May 17 at Golden 1 Center downtown.
“We do not currently know what the next few months or even the next year will look like in our community, our country, or the world,” California State University, Sacramento, President Robert S. Nelsen said in the statement. “But we are committed to celebrating the 2020 graduating class as soon as we are able.
“Commencement is one of the most important and exciting days of the year for the Hornet Family. It is the culmination of years of hard work and sacrifice. Our students want and deserve the chance to celebrate this momentous achievement with their families and friends.”
Graduating students are still asked to pay their graduation fees to fund both their diplomas and the rescheduled ceremony.
Sacramento State canceled all in-person classes through Thursday to prepare for online learning, which begins Friday. The decision was made after consulting with the California State University’s Chancellor’s Office, Sacramento State administration, and Sacramento County health officials.
All California State University campuses postponed their 2020 commencement ceremonies in an effort to curb the spread of the virus, according to a statement late Tuesday.
