Coronavirus

Updated: See how California’s battle against the coronavirus is progressing — in 8 charts

California is weeks in to a statewide stay-at-home order that Gov. Gavin Newsom says is both flattening and “stretching” the curve of the coronavirus pandemic, with a death toll that’s reached at least 2,317 as of Tuesday morning according to data from county and statewide public health departments.

While exact counts on the number of COVID-19 cases — and to a lesser extent, even the number of deaths — are likely underestimates due to the lack of available testing, comparing data from California and elsewhere over a period of time can still provide insight.

While some models, such as the widely shared IHME model from the University of Washington, suggest that California’s coronavirus peak for cases and deaths will come in April, Newsom and other officials have said their internal modeling indicates a peak will begin in mid- to late May.
