American flag latest display on Matterhorn in solidarity during coronavirus pandemic
The Matterhorn lit up with the American flag in a display of solidarity during the coronavirus pandemic.
An artist projected a photo of the flag on the famed Swiss Alps mountain on Thursday. It was the latest in a series of inspirational images as the world endures death and loss from the virus.
“Our thoughts are with all American people at this unprecedented time,” tourism organization Zermatt Matterhorn posted on Facebook. “We look forward to meeting again at the foot of the Matterhorn — we are all in this together.”
The art installation was created by Gerry Hofstetter, who’s been projecting the images on the Matterhorn for weeks. “The light artist has been transforming buildings, monuments, landscapes and mountains all over the world into temporary art objects” since 1999, according to the tourism agency.
Other images include flags of countries hit especially hard by the pandemic, including Italy and Spain, as well as hashtags of #hope and #allofus.
“With this light projection, Zermatt wants to give people a sign of hope and solidarity in these difficult times,” Zermatt Matterhorn said on its website. “The village shows solidarity with all the people who are currently suffering and is grateful to all those who are helping to overcome the crisis.”
Here are just a few of the other images displayed on the mountain. You can also find live webcams of the mountain here.
