Sacramento County reports 5 more coronavirus deaths, spread across capital, suburbs
Sacramento County public health officials announced five additional coronavirus fatalities in a Monday morning update, bringing the jurisdiction’s death toll to 47 since the pandemic began.
The five most recently reported deaths were spread out among the capital and three of the county’s suburban cities, according to the public health department’s online dashboard. Two died in the city of Sacramento, where a total of 24 coronavirus patients have succumbed to the disease so far. One new death was reported in each of Citrus Heights (for a total of five), Rancho Cordova (three) and Folsom (two).
Elk Grove stands at three deaths related to COVID-19, the disease caused by the highly contagious coronavirus, and unincorporated parts of Sacramento County have accounted for 10 deaths as of Monday. The small cities of Galt and Isleton have not reported any coronavirus deaths.
The surge in deaths ties for the second-highest single-day increase the county has experienced so far, and Monday’s newly reported deaths make up almost 11 percent of the death toll. Six coronavirus deaths were disclosed between daily updates April 4 and April 5, a jump from 10 to 16 dead.
In recent weeks, Sacramento County’s reported COVID-19 death toll has grown in spurts — days of no new deaths reported followed by a burst in fatalities reported. No deaths had been reported since last Tuesday, when the toll increased by just one. And prior to that, no coronavirus deaths had been reported by Sacramento County since the previous Wednesday, April 22, in which a daily update showed five more fatalities, a surge from 36 to 41.
While confirmed deaths rose significantly, the county’s infection total continued a slower climb. Only 10 additional cases were confirmed, according to public health officials, for a total so far of 1,127 cases since the virus first appeared in the county in late February.
The new death figures bring the four-county Sacramento region to 72 total coronavirus deaths. In addition to the 47 in Sacramento County, Yolo County as of Sunday reported 17 dead — 12 of them at a single skilled nursing facility in Woodland — and Placer County reports eight fatalities. El Dorado County has yet to report any COVID-19 deaths.
