Coronavirus

Some California businesses can reopen as soon as Friday. Which ones are on the list?

More California businesses will open their doors Friday, Gov. Gavin Newsom declared Monday in modifying orders for some “low-risk” retail sectors.

As the state begins to emerge from a weeks-long shutdown to curb the spread of coronavirus and the numbers of COVID-19 cases, we review which services will open; which are open and which ones remain closed.

Which services can reopen?

Retail designated as low-risk can reopen by Friday for curbside pickup:

Florists

Book stores

Clothing outlets

Music stores

Sporting goods stores

Toy stores

Which services are open?

Essential services, including banking and pharmacies.

Food to include grocery stores and supermarkets, farmers’ markets and food banks, convenience stores, restaurants for take-out and delivery

Laundromats and laundry services

State and local government functions including law enforcement and those that provide programs and services

What’s still closed?

Large public events and gatherings – think concerts and sporting events

Entertainment venues

Bars and nightclubs

Gyms and fitness studios

Shopping malls

But, wait, what about … ?

Counties scattered across California announced they were reopening certain business segments, including retail, as long as businesses and residents adhered to physical distancing.

Some restaurants and retail businesses in Sutter and Yuba counties north of Sacramento reopened Monday with modifications to allow for social distancing.

In far-north Modoc County, officials went further still, allowing all businesses, churches and government functions to reopen and public transit to resume operations, as long as social distancing and sanitation guidelines were followed.
