Manicures, tattoos, massages and more allowed in Solano County this week – with changes

Nail salons, massage parlors, tattoo studios and other personal care services in Solano County can reopen Friday, officials announced.

Last week, Gov. Gavin Newsom cleared salons in qualifying California counties to reopen June 19. At the time, Solano was not among the cleared counties.

On Tuesday, county health officials amended Solano’s guidelines, permitting personal care services to resume operations on Friday, as long as businesses meet state safety requirements.

The state order allowing nail salons to reopen comes after weeks of pressure from nail workers and the cosmetic industry union. The Professional Beauty Federation of California sued the state in May, demanding that California permit hair and nail salons to reopen.

Hair salons, gyms and bars have all been allowed to reopen in Solano. Piercings, facials and waxing will also be allowed to resume.

In order to reopen, Solano salons and studios must provide personal protective equipment for all staff and customers, if necessary, and be regularly sanitized and stocked with disinfecting supplies. Other mandatory standards include ensuring physical distancing of 6 feet.

Also changing will be a familiar feature at nail salons: establishments must take down display shelves of nail polish that customers normally peruse before a pedicure. Patrons will now choose their shade of choice from a sanitized palette.

Each business must also designate a COVID-19 supervisor to ensure proper implementation of and compliance with state health rules.
