Two Elk Grove Raley’s employees test positive for coronavirus, store official confirms

Two employees at a Raley’s in Elk Grove have tested positive for the coronavirus in recent days, officials at the supermarket chain confirmed late Thursday.

The employees who work at store at 4800 Elk Grove Blvd. tested positive June 21 and June 28, Raley’s Supermarkets spokesman Kevin Buffalino said.

It was not known late Thursday how many employees or customers came in contact with the staffers or where they worked in the store, but Buffalino said store employees were notified of the positive cases.

Email messages were also sent to Raley’s customers who potentially came in contact with the infected employees, he said. The West Sacramento-based supermarket chain also posts information on confirmed or suspected COVID-19 cases on its website.

The two were placed on paid leave and told to self-quarantine for 14 days. Other employees who came in contact were also told to stay home, Buffalino said.

The location remains open.

The confirmed cases come as Sacramento County and California are seeing a surge in new cases, prompting a reversing of health orders aimed at tamping down the worsening pandemic.

More than 240,000 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in California and over 6,100 have died, according to the California Department of Public Health. In Elk Grove, there are more than 340 confirmed cases and three deaths from COVID-19, according to Sacramento County Public Health data.

Sacramento County earlier Thursday ordered restaurants to halt indoor dining. Wineries, tasting rooms and movie theaters were also told to close indoor operations. Bars must shut down altogether.

Along with those closures, traditional fireworks displays across the region are shutting down as the Independence Day weekend nears, with public health officials warning against large gatherings.
