Movie theaters opening Friday in Sacramento County. What you need to know before you go
A handful of Sacramento-area movie theaters will reopen Friday, days after Sacramento County relaxed some COVID-19 restrictions.
Cinemark plans to open its Elk Grove and Folsom locations and its Sacramento-area theaters at Arden, Greenback Lane and Downtown Commons:
- Elk Grove: Century Laguna 16 and XD, 9349 Big Horn Boulevard
- Folsom: Century 14, 261 Iron Point Road
- Downtown Sacramento: Century DOCO and XD, 1015 4th St.
- Howe Bout Arden: Century Arden 14 and XD, 1590 Ethan Way
- Carmichael: Century 16 Greenback Lane and XD, 6233 Garfield Ave.
Cinemark’s Blue Oaks Century Theatres & XD, 6692 Lonetree Road in Rocklin, reopened in September.
Moviegoers will see a number of changes at the reopened theaters, according to Cinemark:
- When you buy a ticket, online or in person, the theater automatically blocks the seats next to you and your party.
- Showtimes will be staggered to allow people more time to leave and avoid crowding in restrooms, corridors and lobbies.
- Theaters will be sanitized every 30 minutes.
- Seats will be sanitized before every movie, and ticket holders who order online no longer need to carry their tickets.
- They can instead show their ticket confirmation QR code to an usher.
- Those who buy tickets at the counter no longer need to hand the stub to an usher, but can show the pass and head inside.
- Face coverings are required.
A number of other Sacramento-area theaters — national chains and independents — are either open or are planning to, with modified accommodations for COVID-19.
Regal UA theaters are open across the Sacramento region:
- Regal El Dorado Hills & IMAX, 2101 Vine St.
- Regal UA Laguna Village, 8755 Center Parkway Drive, Sacramento
- Regal Natomas Marketplace ScreenX, 4DX&RPX, 3561 Truxel Road, Sacramento
- Regal UA Olympus Pointe, 520 N. Sunrise Ave., Roseville
- Regal Delta Shores & IMAX, 8136 Delta Shores Circle South, Sacramento

Tower Theatre, 2508 Land Park Drive in Sacramento, plans to reopen soon with a slate of COVID-19 modifications, according to information posted Wednesday on its Facebook page.
Cash will no longer be accepted at Tower, only credit, debit or gift cards. Self-serve and grab-and-go concession areas will be closed and partitions will be installed at concessions counters. Face masks will be required and the theater will reduce seating capacity to maintain physical distancing.
Crest Sacramento, 1013 K St. in downtown Sacramento, recently debuted its outdoor “Under the Stars” series at nearby Ali Youssefi Square, Seventh and K streets.
Esquire IMAX Theatre, 1211 K St., remains closed.
Sacramento County moved into the less-restrictive red tier Tuesday allowing movie theaters, places of worship and other businesses to open with modifications for the first time in months. Movie theaters can reopen at a maximum of 25% capacity or 100 people, whichever is fewer.
Sacramento County’s COVID-19 risk was downgraded, moving out of the California Department of Public Health’s most restrictive “Widespread” Tier 1 and into its “Substantial“ Tier 2.
New state guidance this week also allowed parks and playgrounds to reopen with COVID-19 restrictions.
Museums and zoos also must limit their indoor activities to a maximum 25% capacity.
In Yolo County, health officials also gave businesses and places of worship the go-ahead to allow limited-capacity indoor gatherings.
As in Sacramento County, Yolo has seen reductions in new COVID-19 cases in recent weeks, including the numbers of new cases per 100,000. Yolo County is now registering 3.1 new infections per day per 100,000 population.
Sacramento County had an adjusted daily case rate of 6.6 per 100,000 and positivity rate of 4.6 percent, for the second consecutive week, county health officials said Tuesday.
