Omicron in California

The omicron variant has been driving the coronavirus surge in California since its detection in the state in early December.

Within a few days of its discovery, the variant was found in wastewater samples in Sacramento County that were collected on Nov. 30. By Dec. 21, the county confirmed its first two cases of the omicron variant, which health officials deemed “very contagious.”

As of Wednesday, the omicron variant has ousted the delta variant as the dominant variant in California, Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada and Guam. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 95% of COVID-19 cases stem from the omicron variant in this region , while 5% of cases are from the delta variant.
